This week we went to the landfill site and the staff on the site gave us a technical talk about the different bedding layers of the landfill. We learned that because the landfill requires a high level of soil compaction, it is not a friendly place for plants to grow. We saw areas with different years of construction as we entered the site and realized that those areas that have been restored for more than a decade are not too different from a natural forest. In addition, we found that square shells were used on the site to protect the saplings from weeds and invasive species. And topographic strategies were used to capture rainwater for irrigation.
